AI-powered EHR Workflow: The Challenges of Traditional EHR Workflow in Clinical Practice

AI-powered EHR workflow is transforming clinical documentation, reducing physician burnout, and improving patient care. Throughout one of my clinical rotation experiences at Yale, I had the pleasure of working with  and learning from several clinicians in hematology/oncology specialist care practice. The tasks at hand were to gather critical patient information through patient interviews, clinical notes and chart review, and physical examinations. I would present these patients using the information I gathered to these attending physicians, and they would give me feedback on presentation flow, foci of findings, and further information that they required.

Within each shift, I could only see about one patient per hour. 20 minutes were utilized in actually seeing my assigned patients (either alone or with the attending), 20 minutes were used reviewing the patient’s clinical notes, and the rest were on presenting to my attending. 33% of my time was essentially spent on Epic searching through hundreds of pages of documented information to extract key puzzle pieces of information scattered throughout, and it was up to me to put it all together so that I had a picture of my patient that I could use to tailor my examination.

AI-powered EHR Workflow: A Solution to Physician Burnout and Documentation Inefficiency

I found that this experience was not limited to my colleagues and I. The attending physicians also had a considerable disdain for EHR workflow, especially when receiving new patients. A new patient who had transferred from another tertiary care center had mountains of clinical notes for one of my attendings to go through, each in an unfamiliar format. I remember they had wished for a solution to this lack of efficient and effective communication in the transition-of-care between physicians when receiving new patients, as well as a solution for the time sink that is the general EHR workflow.

This story is not unique. 75% of physicians in the United States facing severe burnout cite EHRs as a main source,[1] spending over half their time in an average workday on EHRs. 33% of their time on EHRs is used on chart review alone.[2] Within this new age of AI in healthcare, it is no longer a fantasy nor even a lofty goal to incorporate new LLM technology into the standard clinical workflow, overcoming the challenges presented by unstandardized, poorly communicated EHR.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the AI-powered EHR workflow is revolutionizing the healthcare industry by addressing the significant challenges posed by traditional electronic health records. As healthcare professionals, we are all too familiar with the time-consuming nature of EHR systems, which not only cause burnout but also hinder efficient patient care. The personal experience shared from a clinical rotation highlights the struggle of extracting key patient data from poorly organized clinical notes, a situation familiar to many in the medical field. The AI-powered EHR workflow is the solution to this pressing issue, offering a more streamlined approach that enables clinicians to focus on patient care rather than navigating cumbersome documentation.

With the integration of AI-powered EHR workflow, we are moving towards a future where healthcare providers can access the information they need instantly and with greater accuracy, significantly reducing burnout and improving patient outcomes. By incorporating AI into EHR systems, physicians can save valuable time, avoid critical documentation errors, and enhance overall communication between healthcare providers, particularly during transitions of care. AI-powered EHR workflow not only promises to address the current crisis in clinical documentation but also lays the groundwork for a more efficient, patient-centered healthcare system. Sporo Health’s innovative approach demonstrates the transformative potential of AI-powered EHR workflow in solving the documentation crisis once and for all.

And this is where Sporo Health comes in – presenting an attainable vision for the future of clinical workflow automation.

OB/GYN practices on athenaHealth manage a scheduling complexity profile distinct from general primary care: continuous prenatal visit series spanning 9+ months, annual well-woman exams, in-office procedures with longer slot lengths, hospital labor and delivery coverage that pulls providers out of clinic unpredictably, and patient privacy considerations that affect communication patterns. Multi Location athenaHealth Scheduling: How to Run Multiple Sites Without Chaos

May 17, 2026 William No comments yet

Multi Location athenaHealth practices have a special class of scheduling problems. Provider was at the south clinic Tuesday, north clinic Wednesday — front desk at south books a Wednesday slot anyway. Provider’s “free” slot turns out to be drive time between sites. A reschedule moves a patient to the wrong location. These problems compound across […]

athenaHealth + Google Calendar Sync for Direct Primary Care (DPC) Practices

May 13, 2026 William 1 comment

Direct Primary Care practices have specific scheduling characteristics that make calendar visibility especially important — fewer patients per provider, longer encounters, membership-driven access, and physicians who own their schedules in a way that’s rare in larger systems. The result: when athenaHealth and Google Calendar don’t sync, the friction shows up faster and matters more than […]
